After sixteen arduous days, a belated Diwali celebration was in order for the 41 workers trapped when a section of the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel under construction in Uttarakhand gave way on November 12. The rescue effort, which spanned more than 400 hours, was marked by unwavering determination. Multiple rescue agencies, under the close supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office, meticulously orchestrated the logistics to bore through 60 meters of dense debris. Simultaneously, the workers trapped inside clung to hope and their mental well-being.
Despite numerous challenges, the afternoon of November 28 signaled a turning point when ‘rat-hole’ miners commenced the painstaking process of tunneling through the last two meters of obstruction with handheld tools. As evening approached, at approximately 8 p.m., the response team was able to swiftly and successively rescue all the trapped laborers.
Here we present a graphical explanation of the rescue operation aptly named – Operation Zindegi.
