The Dome of the Rock (Qubbah al-Sakhrah) is considered sacred to both Jews and Muslims for different reasons. Here’s why it holds significance for each:
Judaism:
The Dome of the Rock is located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which is believed to be the site of the First and Second Jewish Temples. For Jews, the Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism. The Foundation Stone, a rock inside the Dome of the Rock, is believed to be the place where God created the world and where the Ark of the Covenant once stood. It is considered a symbol of the Jewish connection to God and their historical ties to Jerusalem.
Islam:
The Dome of the Rock is also highly revered in Islam. According to Islamic tradition, it is believed to be the place from where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven (al-Mi’raj) during the Night Journey (al-Isra’). The rock inside the dome, known as the Foundation Stone, is believed to be the spot from where Muhammad began his ascent. The Dome of the Rock is considered the third holiest site in Islam, after the Kaaba in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.
