A somber scene unfolded in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, as two passenger trains collided, resulting in six deaths and 18 injuries, police said. This incident occurred months after a horrifying three-train collision in Odisha, which claimed over 280 lives.
The collision occurred when a special passenger train traveling from Visakhapatnam to Palasa was halted due to a signal failure between Alamanda and Kantakapalle near Kothsavatsala. It was struck by the Vizag-Raigad passenger train, leading to the derailment of three coaches.
Initial images from the scene showed the derailed coaches with people gathering around. Railway authorities suspect human error, pointing to missed signaling by the loco pilot as a possible cause. The Delhi railway ministry has set up a war room to monitor the situation.
In response to the incident, the East Coast Railway released helpline numbers for those seeking information regarding the accident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw have reviewed the situation, with the Prime Minister speaking directly to the Railway Minister.
Andhra Chief Minister Jagan Reddy expressed his condolences for the lives lost and directed officials to expedite relief measures and medical services for the injured. Additional ambulances from nearby districts have been mobilized, and arrangements have been made in local hospitals to treat the injured. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw communicated with the Chief Minister, discussing the ongoing relief and rescue operations supervised by local authorities, ensuring that all necessary measures are being taken in the aftermath of this tragic incident.
