32 Lives Lost, 14 Missing

In a tragic incident that unfolded in Kazakhstan, a coal mine fire claimed the lives of at least 32 individuals while leaving 14 others missing. This devastating event occurred at the Kostenko mine, operated by ArcelorMittal Temirtau, the local subsidiary of Luxembourg-based steel giant ArcelorMittal. The company reported that out of the 252 people present at the mine, 206 were successfully evacuated following what appeared to be a methane blast.

Methane Blast Suspected as the Cause

The fire at the coal mine is believed to have been triggered by a pocket of methane gas, adding to a series of workplace fatalities occurring at sites operated by ArcelorMittal Temirtau. This unfortunate event has raised significant concerns about safety practices within the company and the government’s role in overseeing such operations.

President Tokayev Reacts to the Disaster

Kazakhstan’s President, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, expressed his dismay at the situation, denouncing ArcelorMittal’s handling of the incident as the “worst in our history” in terms of cooperation with the government. In response to this tragedy, President Tokayev has instructed his cabinet to halt any further investment cooperation with the company. Additionally, the government has confirmed its intent to work on finalizing a plan to nationalize the company, which also operates the nation’s largest steel mill. Just last month, First Deputy PM Roman Sklyar had mentioned ongoing talks with potential investors interested in taking over the mill.
