1. Meshaal’s Virtual Address at Kerala Rally
Former Hamas leader, Khaled Meshaal, made a virtual appearance and addressed the pro-Palestine “Youth Resistance Rally” in Malappuram district of Kerala. This event, featuring the slogan “Uproot Bulldozer Hindutwa and Apartheid Zionism,” was orchestrated by the Solidarity Movement, affiliated with the state unit of Jamaate Islami Hind. The footage from the rally reveals Meshaal’s message, which was pre-recorded and delivered in Arabic. Organizers of the event recognized him as a “freedom fighter.” Although another Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was expected to join the rally virtually, he was absent.
2. Concerns Raised by Local BJP Leader
K Surendran, the state president of BJP, voiced his objections to the inclusion of Hamas leaders in the Malappuram rally. Expressing his concerns on the social media platform X, Surendran criticized the celebration of Hamas, deemed by many as a terrorist organization, and its leaders, under the guise of the ‘Save Palestine’ movement.
3. Organizer’s Defense of Hamas’s Inclusion
The event organizers defended their decision to feature Meshaal. C T Shuhaib, the state president of the Solidarity organisation, released a statement emphasizing that Hamas’s participation in the rally was not extraordinary, describing them as a “resistance movement.” Shuhaib cited the Palestinian Legislative Council’s (PLC) significant role in Gaza and the West Bank, with Hamas securing a substantial number of seats in the last election. The statement clarified that Hamas isn’t prohibited or active in India, making the inclusion of its leader lawful. The statement further accused the “Sangh Parivar” of attempting to stigmatize those in support of Palestine, adding that further such events are planned in India to showcase solidarity with Palestine.
4. Solidarity’s Future Plans
Solidarity has announced its intention to continue organizing events and campaigns, specifically against the perceived Hindutva-Zionist alliance.
