In a significant political shift, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Mizoram, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the state’s governance. The oath-taking ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan, also saw ZPM leader Vanlalruata being sworn in as a Cabinet Minister. This historic event was attended by Mizo National Front leader and outgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga, alongside all MNF MLAs, including legislature party leader Lalchhandama Ralte. Former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was also present, highlighting the transition of power.
Lalduhoma’s path to leadership was cemented following his meeting with the Governor on Thursday, where he officially staked his claim to form the state government. Expressing his gratitude and plans post the meeting, Lalduhoma stated, “We are very honored by the Governor. Our priority is to support agriculture, focusing on purchasing four key agricultural products.”
The ZPM’s ascent to power comes after a decisive victory in Monday’s assembly polls, where they unseated the incumbent Mizo National Front by securing 27 seats in the 40-member assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress trailed significantly, securing two and one seat, respectively.
Eddy Zosangliana, the ZPM media cell general secretary, revealed that the Val Upa Council, the party’s advisory body, met Lalduhoma on Wednesday to discuss the formation of the council of ministers. Mizoram’s legislative structure allows for up to 12 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
Post-formation, Chief Minister Lalduhoma committed to financial reforms and addressing the financial crises he believes the state is inheriting. He announced the creation of a resource mobilization team dedicated to this purpose. Lalduhoma also prioritized the agricultural sector, promising to focus on the welfare of farmers and the development of the state’s infrastructure. He pledged to construct three new hydroelectric dams, aiming to generate about 300 MW of power. Moreover, he assured that power tariffs would not increase for the next five years, emphasizing his government’s commitment to sustainable development.
