On Wednesday, multiple shootings occurred in Lewiston city, Maine, resulting in the death of at least 22 individuals. The individual responsible is yet to be apprehended. CNN reports that between 50 to 60 individuals sustained injuries, though the exact number injured by gunfire is yet to be confirmed.
A photograph released by Reuters from October 25 displays a man, identified by the police as a suspect, aiming what seems to be a semiautomatic rifle in Lewiston, Maine. Robert Card, a 40-year-old man, has been recognized by the Lewiston Police Department as a person of potential significance in relation to these shootings. Authorities have advised the public that Card should be viewed as armed and a potential threat.
ABC News has reported that the shootings occurred in a bowling alley, a local bar, and a Walmart distribution facility. The Associated Press, based on information from two anonymous law officials, revealed that the crime scenes are still under investigation and evidence collection is ongoing.
The Lewiston Police disclosed earlier that they were looking into “at least two active shooter incidents” in the city, and released two images of the presumed suspect with what seemed to be a semiautomatic rifle. The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office advised businesses to either shut or lock down, as the suspect has not yet been captured.
The Maine state police issued an alert about the active shooter on its social media platform, X, asking residents to remain inside their homes with doors locked as the investigations at multiple sites continue.
Reuters reported that President Joe Biden has been informed about the incident. Expressing his sorrow, Lewiston’s Mayor, Carl Sheline, emphasized the city’s resilience and spirit, stating to CNN, “Lewiston is known for our strength and grit, and we will need both in the forthcoming days.”
This event in Lewiston marks the most lethal mass shooting in the U.S. since May 2022. At that time, a shooter attacked an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, causing the death of 19 students and two educators. Reuters, sourcing the Gun Violence Archive, shared this data. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, shootings involving four or more victims have seen a rise. In 2022 alone, at least 647 such incidents were documented, as per archive data.
