In a significant development in Pakistan, Hanzla Adnan, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist and mastermind of the deadly 2015 attack on a BSF convoy in Jammu and Kashmir, was killed by unknown gunmen in Karachi. Adnan, considered close to LeT chief Hafiz Saeed, was shot outside his safe house on the night of December 3, despite being under ISI security. After being shot, he was secretly admitted to a hospital in Karachi by the Pakistani army and died on December 5th.
Hanzla Adnan had recently moved his base of operations from Rawalpindi to Karachi. He was a key conspirator in the 2015 Udhampur attack, where a BSF convoy was targeted, resulting in the death of two BSF soldiers and injuries to 13 others. The attack was investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and a charge sheet was filed in 2015. Additionally, Adnan played a role in the 2016 attack on a CRPF convoy in Pampore, providing instructions to terrorists from Pakistan. He was also known as Lashkar-e-Taiba’s communication expert.
This killing is part of a pattern observed over the last six months, where several wanted terrorists from India have been killed in Pakistan. On May 6, Paramjit Singh Panjwar of the Khalistan Commando Force, involved in various crimes including drug smuggling and the murder of 18 students in Paala, was killed. On October 10th, Jaish-e-Mohammad’s Shahid Latif, a key conspirator of the Pathankot attack, was also killed. Lakhbir Singh Rode, a Khalistani terrorist, died of a heart attack recently in Pakistan.
There is speculation about the role of unknown gunmen and India’s potential involvement in these incidents. However, intelligence sources suggest that Pakistan is keen to disown many Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists to avoid scrutiny from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). While some high-profile terrorists remain safe in Pakistan, three that were wanted in India have been killed in the last six months.
Experts like Sushant Sareen, Senior Fellow at ORF, Yasir Azad, former IPS officer and Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, and Major General AK Siwach, a defense expert, provided insights into these developments. The reasons behind these killings could include ISI’s involvement, internal gang rivalry, or FATF pressures. The situation indicates a chaotic internal state in Pakistan, with potential implications for their policy towards India and other regional dynamics.
