As the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Director Christopher Wray prepares for his upcoming visit to India, a spotlight is thrown on the contentious issue of Khalistani terrorism. The visit is shadowed by recent allegations against an Indian citizen and an official in connection to an assassination attempt on Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani terrorist and American citizen.
Inaction from the West: A One-Sided Alliance?
Experts in a panel discussion on The Nation TV, moderated by Managing Editor Gaurav Sawant, emphasize a growing concern in New Delhi: the apparent apathy of the US and Canada towards Indian concerns about Khalistani activities. Notably, Brahma Chellaney, a prominent security expert, points out the irony in the US’s strategic partnership with India, which seems to neglect the actual security needs of India.
The Complexity of Counter-Terrorism Cooperation
Terry Milewski, a renowned Canadian journalist, and Tara Kartha, an author specializing in security issues, echoed these concerns. They highlighted the paradox in the FBI’s charter, which emphasizes neutralizing terrorist cells in the US, yet overlooks the activities of groups like Sikhs for Justice, led by Pannun, across various countries.
Evidence Ignored: A Pattern of Neglect
Shashi Kant, the former Director General of Punjab Police, shared insights into the lack of action despite India providing substantial evidence to both the US and Canada. He recalled the history of bilateral relations, where concerns about Khalistani terrorism have often been sidelined.
Canada’s Historical Oversights
Highlighting past instances of Canada’s inaction, such as the 1985 Air India bombing, Milewski criticized the Canadian authorities for their historical negligence towards threats highlighted by India.
The Road Ahead: A Need for Bilateral Cooperation
The discussions underscore a need for genuine bilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism. With India seeking answers and the US and Canada’s strategic interests in balance, the upcoming talks with the FBI Director could prove pivotal in defining future relations and actions against Khalistani elements.
